Selling your home is a big deal. When potential buyers come by to see your home they are going to see is the outside of your home before anything else. You want to make the best first impression you can and that starts with what’s on the outside.

1. Add flowers to the flower boxes

If you have flower boxes, it’s a good idea to fill them with flowers. They will add a pop of colour to the outside of your home. Leaving flower boxes empty makes them look abandoned. Fill the flower box with flowers of the same colour. The uniform colour will make a good impression.

2. Paint the fence and porch

The fence and the porch are two parts of the outside of your home that can make a good or bad impression depending on their condition. It’s not enough just to have a porch or fence. You want them to be in good condition. If neither have been painted in a while, now is the perfect time. Think of the fence and the porch as a frame for your house. You want the frame to look as good as what’s inside.

3. Trim shrubs and trees

Unruly trees and shrubs can make the yard look like a lot of work that you don’t want to deal with. Don’t give potential buyers that impression by leaving shrubs, bushes, and trees looking uncared for. Spending the time to trim them and make them look good will be well worth the effort.

4. Declutter

If you’ve got children or hobbies that you do in the front or backyard, it’s important that you declutter these areas. No one wants to see all your children’s toys, cars you work on in your spare time, or collection of angelic water fountains strewn around. Pick up the odds and ends. The swing set can stay, assuming it’s something your kids still use and it doesn’t look awful. If it hasn’t been used in years, now is the perfect time to dispose of it. You might enjoy your collection of lawn ornaments, but it’s a good idea to leave just one or two out when trying to sell your home.

5. Bring new life to little things

It’s easy to forget the little things when you are rushing around trying to get your home prepared for potential buyers. The little things might seem unimportant, but when people are looking for a home to purchase they see everything, including things you no longer notice. You probably don’t notice your faded and weathered mailbox anymore, but a potential buyer might. Repaint it or shine it up. Clean up the outside light fixtures, keep the porch and walkways swept, and clean the outside of the windows. If you can paint the front door, that would make your house look fresh without having to paint the entire house. If you have flower pots that have been neglected, clean them up.

Cleaning up the outside of your home is just as important as anything that you do on the inside. Get potential buyers excited by cleaning up the outside of your property and making it look it’s best.
