Garage Sale – Maximize Your Garage’s Potential

Often neglected by homeowners, garages – which offer valuable storage and work space – are a priority for many buyers.  Maximize your garage’s potential as a selling feature with these staging tips.

  • Remove clutter.  If you don’t need it now and won’t need it at your next address, sell it, donate it, or toss it.  De-cluttering will make your garage look more spacious, and space – not your stuff – is what buyers want to see.
  • CleanClear out the cobwebs, obliterate oil stains, and wash the windows.  Sweep the floor and give it a washing with a mop, hose, or power washer.    
  • If you haven’t done so recently, give your garage walls, floor, and ceiling a fresh coat of paint.  A light, neutral shade is a nice option over the typical “garage gray”.
  • Anything staying in your garage until you move should be put back in a neat, organized fashion: hung on hooks or pegboard, sat on shelves, inside cabinets or totes.  Ideally, there should be nothing on the floor. 
  • Make sure that lighting is functional and bright, switches and outlets are covered and working properly, and that garage doors open and close smoothly and quietly. 
  • If your garage doors are looking outdated or worse for wear, paint them or replace them altogether (perhaps with doors featuring decorative glass inserts).  They’re one of the most dominating features of your house’s exterior, so giving them a makeover can really help improve your curb appeal. 
  • For showings and open houses, park your vehicle(s) in your driveway or on the street – a garage that’s empty looks a lot bigger than one that’s full.
